Welcome to My Rawkin Journey!

Hello everyone! My name is Amy and I am 25 years old. I am currently an ovo-lacto vegetarian (and have been for about 9 years now). I am interested in starting a transition into an 80%-100% raw foods diet.

The reason I am starting this blog is to document my transition into raw foods. I will be listing the foods that I eat (and posting some pictures) and posting recipes. I will also be offering my recommendations of films, books and websites that pertain to raw foods as I come across more of them. I hope that you all enjoy reading about my journey!

Why do I want to transition to a raw foods diet?
There are many reasons: I want to live longer, feel better, lose weight, have a clear complexion, have more energy, prevent illness and disease, and lower my cholesterol. My grandmother is diabetic, has high cholesterol and just had 3 stints put in her heart in May. That is a really big wake-up call for me to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

What are raw foods?
Raw foods includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains that have not been heated or cooked over 118 degrees. When food is heated over that temperature, it will start to lose it's natural enzymes, vitamins and minerals.

So far, I have experimented with sprouting my own alfalfa, radish and red clover seeds and mung beans. I have also made almond milk and cashew milk. I have prepared my kitchen with a Ninja blender and food processor, a sprout jar, a nut milk bag and an Excalibur dehydrator. I'm reading the book "The Live Food Factor, The Comprehensive Guide to the Ultimate Diet for Body, Mind, Spirit and Planet" by Susan Schenck and Victoria Bidwell. I've also researched raw food forums, blogs, recipes and videos online.

I would highly recommend checking out: The Raw Food World (Matt Monarch and Angela Stokes-Monarch have an online store, a T.V. show that airs daily and a radio show), The Renegade Health Show (Kevin and Annmarie Gianni have an online store and a T.V. show that airs Monday-Friday), Gone Raw (a site to share and discuss raw, vegan recipes from around the world) and living-foods.com ( a site that educates the world about the power of the living and raw vegetarian food diet).
